Abstract

Keywords: emergency remote learning; online learning; hybrid learning; education; teaching.

Everything has changed since March 2020.

From a Friday to a Monday, schools, and universities had to change from in-class teaching and learning to emergency remote teaching and learning (ERTL), all over the world.

This “new” demanding environment for students and teachers could be taken as a teaser for a future change in education.

The educational community had to switch from schools to homes, facing constraints of all kinds, such as technological, psychological, and social. These may have an impact on the social and cultural development of each country.

Was this an opportunity to transform the way education is provided or was it a drawback? Will the hybrid system be the “new normal”?

Following these challenges, this presentation reflects on the experience as head of the Portuguese Army Language Centre and as a teacher at Instituto dos Pupilos do Exército discussing the main differences between ERTL, online and face-to-face teaching, and learning experiences.
